What to Wear in Alaska!

Before departing on your Alaska Cruises take time to pack correctly for the weather you will encounter along the Inside Passage or beyond if an Alaska Land and Sea cruise is in your future. Layered clothes, comfortable shoes and wind and rain protection are some of the items you need to pack for your upcoming Alaska cruises.

Throughout Alaska casual attire is the preferred dress code and is acceptable in nearly every establishment you may visit. Throughout the Inside Passage in ports like Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Sitka, the summer temperatures run from the 50's in the spring and fall all the way up into the 80's in June through mid-August.

Our summers these past few years have been abnormally warm and dry, especially in the spring when mornings can be cool but the mid-day temps have been reaching into the 70's and 80's. Dressing in layers allows you to adjust for the changes in temperatures as the days progress.

Dressing For Alaska

Wearing layered clothing includes: a light weight shirt with a fleece mid-layer. This is complemented with a wind and waterproof shell should the need arise; mornings can bring in some cooler fog.

I always take along a small waterproof rucksack or backpack to carry my clothing when not in use. The pack also serves to carry a water bottle, snack and any souvenirs that I buy.

Extremely important are the shoes you choose as they must be comfortable when walking and its best if they too are waterproof with good traction. Walking shoes with good support like those from Keen or Clarks have proven to be very comfortable and durable in the Alaskan environment. Whatever shoes you choose to bring, be sure they are not so new as to cause chaffing or discomfort. Break in any new shoes before you set sail on your cruise.
